I was a soldier who sharpened his sword
and went to war
until I saw that my fellow soldiers didn't know what for
I laid down my arms and stood aside
but before I got home every piece of me died
I'm still alive but these scars are all that's mine
and it's not right
how it tears me up inside
but if you can't love your enemies
you will never end this fight
so I dug my trenches
and lived behind safe doors
but at home I found just another version of the wars
yeah people on both sides of all these issues
are making some sense to me
and though these days I'm more disarming
than crossing swords
sometimes I'm still the stubborn side of me
and I will fight
with those who only know their side
because if you can love your enemies
there's no more pretend divide
these lives we've taken trying to reach
some kind of transcendental thing
the time we've wasted trying to beat
ourselves into a new regime
we don't accept what we can see
blinded by our hostility
and the things we fear

as the pendulum swings
left to right
a full stop just seems so blissful
all this movement is so dizzying
but you find, in time,
like oxygen and food and water
sometimes you just need someone to care that you're alive
but as soon as you open up
someone else is climbing in
and then you're moving again
and it's goodbye to that peaceful stagnation
I was coming up for air
but you're content to hold me down
in the darkness that we share
yeah, it's getting hard to breathe
but maybe you forgot
this feeling is nothing new to me
at first it's cool wind on my face
maybe a trace of smile
I'm feeling things I haven't for a while
you and me can return to the good times
and pretty soon I'm letting go...
instead of holding tight
but I am starting to understand how simple one false move can be
how simple your false move can be
as much as I hate going overboard
I find in time,
like oxygen and food and water
sometimes you just need someone to care that you're alive
as soon as you open up
someone else is climbing in
and then you're moving again
and it's goodbye to that peaceful stagnation
I was coming up for air
but you're content to hold me down
in the darkness that we share
yeah, it's getting hard to breathe
but maybe you forgot
this feeling is nothing new to me
but you're a risk I had to take
and the next one will be the same
you're a risk I had to take
and the next one will be the same
I was coming up for air
but you're content to hold me down
in the darkness that we share
yeah, it's getting hard to breathe
but maybe you forgot
this feeling is nothing new to me

Where Does The Time Go
02:50
|
|
||
I spend my nights realizing that the future
is a puzzle I can't crack
and I was never good at taking mistakes back
so I choose to run away
or withdraw to my own place
make these problems ones I don't have to face
and it's been 5 years
but I keep thinking
where does the time go?
where does the time go?
no one can swim against that undertow
you made sure I couldn't win
but I don't choose my dreams
now I only search for you
in everything
I spend my days accepting that the past
is a lock without a key
but breaking things never appealed to me
you knew that we'd need time
maybe that was your design
to run so fast that I'd never decide
like a shadow when I shine the light
it's gone
the elusiveness is the force that drives me on
drives me on
and it's been 5 years
but I keep thinking
where does the time go?
where does the time go?
no one can swim against that undertow
you made sure I couldn't win
but I don't choose my dreams
now I only search for you
in everything

there's a million reasons keeping you away
from all the things you should be doing
don't let them shut you out
pick your targets, make your plans
stop sitting around here
'cause you're just lying
and you'll never figure out
that you're still breathing
you're still feeling
you're not drowning
and everything you want is out there waiting
maybe it is better than you think
just climb over the walls outside your tank
learning comes from surviving each mistake
whichever path you take
there's a million things you don't see everyday
because you're inside your mind thinking
or just waiting around
don't assume or project your feelings on everything you see
or you're just lying
and you'll never figure out
that you're still breathing
you're still feeling
you're not drowning
and everything you want is out there waiting
maybe it is better than you think
just climb over the walls outside your tank
learning comes from surviving each mistake
whichever path you take

Your Bones
03:52
|
|
||
A thousand years older
and none the wiser
and there’s no change on the horizon
if we don’t change this pace then we are screwed
This experiment was once noble
but a republic behooves its people
to care to understand the things they do
But you
You can’t face this – no
you can’t face this
This is a call
to shovel all this mud and hate out from our home
and you oughtta know
seems like you have the same things inside your bones
a million tons left to decompose
the cost of which you do not know
or care as long as your coffee is hot
self-evident is this problem
some things must take care to solve them
but modern man would rather let them rot
Because you
You can’t face this – no
you can’t face this
So bring the pain, bring the storms
all the lies that keep you warm
there’s no thunder in your veins
and you’ve got lightning on the brain
go ahead, equivocate
change the grounds of the debate
faulty logic must mutate
so use emotion to conflate
So bring the pain, bring the storms
all the lies that keep you warm
there’s no thunder in your veins
and you’ve got lightning on the brain
This is a call
to shovel all this mud and hate out from our home
and you oughtta know
seems like you have the same things inside your bones

you're the blanket of night
warm but you never like a sunny day
yet you want no clouds
and wonder why there's never been a drop of rain
well I'm broken in my own way
and paranoid at best
but I realize (I realize)
a paradox can never compromise
you're just a liar
where there's smoke there is a fire
if it was burning up
or you
I'd choose whichever one was true
how do you care
for a wound that doesn't feel pain?
what doesn't hurt
doesn't understand why it should change
somewhere inside myself
I knew that we could never grow beyond
the way we only talk to prove the other wrong
if love is just a time bomb then we'd never escape it at your pace
so I just clipped the wires
and took it in the face
you're just a liar
where there's smoke there is a fire
if it was burning up
or you
I'd choose whichever one was true
liar
where there's smoke there is a fire
if it was burning up
or you
I'd choose whichever one was true

Sleep Alone
03:41
|
|
||
you are what you think
so don't think you're alone
though it's easier to fight yourself
than pick up the phone
sure your tears are water
like problems are fires
that can only be put out with all your simplest desires
you're cold, it seems like you're lost
you jump in the sea when you're tired of being tossed
you're hurting, you're fighting
there's been no happy ending
you're toying with hoping
that one could be pending
and the wide world out there
is smaller than you make it
rain seems colder and good days come and go
the past is so bittersweet
the future's so unknown
waking up is hard enough
I don't want to sleep alone
life has no road signs
and yet we all still drive
it's certain that we'll crash
but sometimes we survive
your heart is beating fast
so I know you're still alive
don't glorify the past
when the future can still thrive
the wide world out there is smaller than you make it
days get brighter, the sun is always there
the past, as ever, bittersweet
the future's so unknown
but waking up is hard enough
I don't want to sleep alone

is there anything that you don't know
when an answer's just a click away?
(that's just what they say)
I could find a thousand more
just depending whose I take
things are just so much easier to believe
when they come from a TV screen
the desperation of our situation
lost its potency
whatever happened to the tactile times
now a fire doesn't hurt the same
we can cauterize our senses
and let the world just burn away
oh we can already see that it's too late
an idea takes hold and starts to propogate
oh we can be the ones to change our minds
to look from another side
and find there's a world bigger than our lives
one day just bite your tongue
and admit you can be wrong
there's a bliss in hearing
that self-denial song
it will hurt to separate
from the discord in your mind
but there will be beauty
when we start to harmonize
oh we can already see that it's too late
an idea takes hold and starts to propogate
oh we can be the ones to change our minds
to look from another side
and find there's a world bigger than our lives

Avarice
03:49
|
|
||
if avarice is who we are
no wonder I'm not getting far
you think life is selling out your soul
and counting up the total
take a walk through Tower One
this is where the money’s made
but nobody in here seems to be alive
opulence - a corporate shrine,
just look at how the windows shine
and to the darkness: never mind
so punch the clock
and keep this going
I’ve only got so much life to waste
you love to think
that you can own me
you can’t see through my smiling face
if avarice is who we are
no wonder I'm not getting far
inside you, there's no soul where there should be
money buys an empty house
but it can't buy humanity
Yet another conversation
that I should change my motivations;
buy a piece of the company mirage
what’s success without a cause -
the newest cars, the biggest garage?
your ambition is camouflage
so punch the clock
and keep this going
I’ve only got so much life to waste
your money buys most anything
but it can’t buy you humanity
if avarice is who we are
no wonder I'm not getting far
inside you, there's no soul where there should be
money buys an empty house
but it can't buy humanity

Warhawks
03:54
|
|
||
Dissidents and innocents
drowned out by belligerents
unconcern, negligence
feeding their malevolence
They say fires still burn there
yet no one voted for this warfare
I guess blame has no place here
‘cause no smoke’s in our sunrise
Deployed across the sea
Whoa, whoa, you just wanna let this go
then who stands in the way?
Whoa, whoa, what is worse than losing hope?
Trading it away
I doubt that it’s much solace
to the kid with waking dreams
he doesn’t understand intentions
just the guns and the machines
The blame lies right here
We need no plane to get there
we can’t prove that this warfare
has ever saved a life
Deployed across the sea
with enemies in DC
Whoa, whoa, if you just wanna let this go
who stands in the way?
Whoa, whoa, what is worse than losing hope?
Trading it away
Just one light can tame the darkness
but only you control your eyes
this world is shrinking, nothing is far away
we’re more in common than our minds allow
we’re over-thinking, the things we say
they'll only listen if we're loud
Whoa, whoa, you just wanna let this go
who stands in the way?
Whoa, whoa, what is worse than losing hope?
Trading it away

what if we could see how we were shrinking
how lack of thinking
is atrophy
what if half of all our pain and sickness
is self-inflicted
and gaining steam
then this isn't a thought
that you can just ignore
if we understand our place
in the black behind the stars
the world is now a fight on every corner
watching from the sides is not enough
if we don't learn to love in spite of little things
the bigger things will always call our bluff
what if we looked out into the empty
and past the brightness saw what we are
what if all you gain is all just worthless
except the value inside your heart
turn this into a game
but no one's playing anymore
we're at war everywhere we need love
there's no reason big enough for hatred
your point of reference lies above
understand how small we are
to the black behind the stars
do you
understand how small we are
to the black behind the stars
the world is now a fight on every corner
watching from the sides is not enough
if we don't learn to love in spite of little things
the bigger things will always call our bluff
understand how small you are
in the black behind the stars?
understand how small you are
in the black behind the stars
